The Life Cycle and Span of LED Lights
Many traditional halogen lamps required a duty cycle. This means that you could run the light for roughly 15 minutes and then had to leave the light off for 15 minutes. This preserved the length of the lamp, but added a severe limitation to the fixtures effectiveness.
Modern LED sourced fixtures do not require a duty cycle. A Light Emitting Diode is a semiconductor that uses much less energy to produce the same amount of electroluminescence. Thus, they generate less heat, and there is less stress on the fixture, eliminating the need for a duty-cycle.
LED Lamp Life
Modern LED sourced fixtures have an estimated lamp life of up to 10,000 hours. That is over 416 days of continuous use. If you consider the following average use of an LED fixture for a dance club, DJ, or live band, you can see that it will provide years of useful service.
Average lifespan for a modern LED light is typically 10,000 hours. Which for 16 hours of use can equal about 625 weekends or a 12 year total lifespan.
Solid-state devices, including those like LEDs can be subjected to rather limited wear when they are operated at lesser rates and at lower temperatures. Astonishingly, many LEDs that have been produced since the 1970’s and 1980’s are still being used today. A typical lifetime for most LED manufacturers is 10k to 100k hours however both current settings and the temperature while in use can either lengthen or diminish this life cycle significantly.
The most common sign leading to the failure of an LED or diode laser light is typically an eventual lowering of the light’s output, ie, the brightness of the light and a gradual lessening of its efficiency. However, failures that are sudden, such as when they simply stop emitting light and do not turn back on, though rare, can happen as well. The earliest LED lights that were manufactured had a distinctively short lifespan. However, with the latest technologies and improvements, even the highest power LED’s can last longer than traditional lights, even when subjected to more difficult conditions. As with most electrical or electronic devices or accessories, the matter of use and stress on the device can lessen lifespan.
One look at an LED fixture will convince you of the brightness and brilliance of light produced by an LED fixture. One of the most advantageous things about LED-based lighting is the high efficiency, as measured by its light output per unit power input.
